Ever since the discovery that malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes in 1897, vector control has been the primary tool in the fight against this disease. Well over 60% of cases averted are due to the use of bednets alone. In order to apply vector control effectively in time and space and to make optimal use of limited resources, it is important to conduct effective planning and do so in a strategic manner. This course looks at how vector surveillance & control fits into the overall context of a National Malaria Control Plan, what are the essential elements of a vector surveillance & control programme, and how to go about developing an effective plan.
