Atlanta Braves Will Chop And Chant Themselves Into Embarrassment During
Published at : October 28, 2021
Atlanta Braves officials keep ruining a perfectly wonderful story, and they’re doing so with all of that other stuff. Why the chopping and the chanting? Why move closer to embarrassment on national television at the end of the week courtesy of those things and whatever other self-inflicted horrors you might have for yourselves around Halloween? Why can’t Braves officials let everybody enjoy the reasons this franchise has one of the most amazing teams ever to win a pennant as the Braves prepare to open the World Series Tuesday night in Houston against the Astros? Regarding the Braves’ miracle in progress:Acuna, Ozuna and d’Arnaud were 2020 National League Silver Slugger winners, meaning they were the best hitters at their position. Without that trio, the Braves never broke .500 for the season until early August, but management made six deals around the July 31 trade deadline to help the Braves win the NL East for the fourth consecutive year. Then they handled the favored Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Division Series. After that, the Braves forgot they blew leads of 2-0 and 3-1 in their best-of-seven NL Championship Series last season against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Here’s proof of the Braves’ amnesia: They spent last week going up 2-0 and 3-1 in the NLCS against the Dodgers (sound familiar), but this time, the Braves clinched their first World Series berth since 1999 Saturday night at Truist Park in Atlanta with a 4-2 victory during Game 6. Vocal anti-vaxxer Tritt sang the national anthem, though. Then came enough chopping and chanting before, during and after the game to make you think John Wayne had risen from the dead to lead a fake cavalry against a fake group of Native Americans before movie cameras. If you’re in charge of the Braves, and if you want as many folks as possible in the highly diverse city of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birth to spend money in the $1.1 billion village you built four years ago called The Battery — featuring Truist Park, restaurants, shops and other things designed to produce revenue for the franchise — you don’t hint you’re more into elephants (Republicans) than donkeys (Democrats). Figuratively speaking, you choose giraffes or some other kind of animal. Which means you avoid suggesting you prefer a certain political party. Which means you don’t remind the rest of the nation you joined your Republican governor, Brian Kemp, in ripping Major League Baseball officials for removing the All-Star Game from your ballpark this summer after Kemp and his Republican colleagues in the Georgia state legislature approved a restrictive and racist voting law. In other words, you would think Braves officials would leave Tritt alone. This is the same Tritt who spent the last few days cancelling performances in states that want their citizens at such events to show proof of vaccination while adhering to other COVID-19 safety measures.
