Australian National University’s East Asia Forum editor Shiro Armstrong says China’s interest in joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership will hopefully entice the United States to re-join the trade pact.

“The hope is that the Chinese interest in the Trans-Pacific Partnership will encourage the United States to step up and, in fact, join the TPP again,” he told Sky News Australia.

“There’s been some rumblings out of Washington that they will consider the TPP again, but they want to renegotiate some of the rules.

“Now, that’s going to be quite difficult, but either way, with the United States or China joining the TPP, in the case of the United States re-joining, it’s going to take a long time.

“The membership, the existing 11 country membership, has really moved on from the time Donald Trump tore up the agreement on day one of his presidency.” China's bid could entice US into re-joining TPP
